INTRODUCTION
It is proud to quote what Suherdi (2007: vi) states in his “Menakar Kualitas Proses Belajar Mengajar” related to the teaching
learning process:
…kualitas proses belajar mengajar
This indicates that “the burning issue” to improve
the quality of teaching in Indonesia is “on the teacher’s hand”. In other words, it can be said that the best
curriculum, the best syllabus or lesson plan we have will not guarantee that
the teaching learning process will achieve the desired result, when the teacher
does not have a capability to implement them in the classroom or interact or
communicate them in the classroom interaction.
Suherdi (2007) states that the level of quality of
Indonesian education now is at the bottommost. It is very tragic. There are many hypothesis proposed in line
with the cause of the failure. Most of the educational observers or researcher
place the teacher as the main source of the problem referring to their incapability
to implement the curriculum, lesson plan in the classroom interaction.
In line with the argument, it must be found a tool
to investigate and analyze the classroom interaction to help the teacher find
the appropriate methodology in his teaching. Fortunately, Indonesia has “a real
fighter”, a real educator” who really concerns with the quality of Indonesian
Education and spends most of his time to contribute his idea to improve it. He
is Mr. Didi Suherdi. He found a very practical way of investigating and
analyzing the classroom interaction which is named “the pedagogical microscope”
This finding enlightens and provides a new hope in
improving our education. It is very creative and innovative in which it helps
to look at in details what is happening in the classroom. So, the information
we get will lead us to choose the appropriate technique, methodology or
approach in teaching.
Going to SMPN 1 Banjaran, Kabupaten Bandung,
analyzing the lesson plan, observing a teacher teaching, recording real
teaching, transcribing the classroom interaction and analyzing the
transcriptions by using the pedagogical microscope seem very helpful,
advantageous and to be “a landmark” in order to portray the classroom
activities comprehensively and will help the teacher to develop his own way to
achieve the desired result of the learning as stated in KTSP. And this is one
of ways to do “muhasabah and ijtihad pedagogis”
(Suherdi, 2007)
That is why we dare proposing to Mr. Didi Suherdi
to add one more word to his finding: “The
Suherdi Pedagogical Microscope” as the appreciation of the very innovative,
creative finding.
This paper
is the result of the collaborative work to discuss one of the assignments in
the subject: “Language Test and Evaluation lectured by Dr. H. Didi Suherdi.
M.Ed. This is the second part of the final assignment consisting of
- Lesson plan,
- The
transcription of classroom interaction,
- The samples of
the students’ work in the portfolio.
All the items above help the members of the group
do the individual work of analyzing each step and inter-steps in the
genre-based approach and the evaluative steps applied by the teacher in the
classroom interaction. This work also tries to give suggestions to the teacher
to make an innovative and creative step in the teaching learning process.
