THE PROFILE OF UQI ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOL

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
This institution manages two educations, namely Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) or junior high school and Madrasah Aliyah (MA) or senior high school. The applied curriculum is integrated curriculum which integrates among curriculum of Modern and Salaf Islamic boarding school, curriculum of Department of religious affairs and curriculum of Department of National Education. In this respect, it intends to make its graduates become cadres of Muslim religious teacher or leader (Ulama) who are able to benefit IQ (Intelligence Quotient), EQ (Emotional Quotient) and SQ (Spiritual Quotient), true believers, broad knowledge, and pious deed doers.
INSTITUTIONAL FOUNDATION
The education of UQI Islamic boarding school is based on an refers to four main principles, namely the basic value of education, vision and mission of UQI Islamic boarding school, the orientation of education and philosophical education as detailed below: 
A.    The basic value
  1. The Islamic value includes:
a.       Aqidah (belief), syari’ah (Islamic laws) and Akhlaq (moral or character)
b.      Scientific tradition, mainly in the Islamic golden age
c.       Philosophy or beneficial science

VISION AND MISSION OF UQI ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOL
Ä  Vision
UQI Islamic boarding school is an institution to establish the religion which attempts to educate the religious generation, remembrance of Allah (Dzikir) and intellectual Muslim for the sake of Allah and expects Allah’s acquiescence. Moreover, he/she has basic competence in religious knowledge and secular knowledge by implementing his function as kholifah (leader) of universe who is proactive, creative, and innovative to give benefits to human being and humanity.

  1. Educates believable, scientistic and charitable Muslim as well as able to preach to the right path, enjoin goodness and interdict wickedness.
  2. Produce an outstanding and dexterous personality who is able to master both English and Arabic spoken and written

  4. Manifests and develops a qualified, representative and  affordable educational institution and becomes a social agent

THE UNIQUENESS OF EDUCATION
UQI Islamic boarding school is a religious educational institution which has the uniqueness namely “Islamic boarding school” or Pesantren, community based, and aims to prepare students to be a member of society who meditates and implements Islamic doctrine and becomes the expert of Islam.  
To attain this goal, UQI Islamic boarding school strives to retain this uniqueness, so it will not lose its identity mainly as Islamic boarding school which is indigenous culture. Some uniquenesses of UQI Islamic boarding school are s follows:
1.      Eduactional system and curriculum
The educational system at UQI is integrative design which integrates among the educational system of modern and Salaf  Islamic boarding school, educational system of Department of religious affairs and Department of National Education as an integrated unit which is systematic, open, and multi-meaningful with the main emphasis of culture and  empowerment to the students.
UQI emphasizes more education and culture rather than only teaching, thus the model and discipline become the paramount thing in students’ daily life. The leader or director (Kyai) and the headmasters are not only as the central figure or top-manager, but also as moral force for the whole students and UQI occupants.  
The curriculum at UQI is integrated curriculum, which combines among National curriculum, UQI curriculum, and curriculum which runs in the Islamic countries. UQI employs “Diversity Curriculum” to develop its own curriculum vertically and horizontally. However, it is based on the standard of National Education.   
2.      Educational goal and orientation
UQI educational goal is not only vertical namely to pursue study at university but also horizontal i.e. to prepare students to dedicate themselves in the community by having various competences that needed mainly the basic intellectuality, leadership, pedagogy, and social.   
3.      Educational Management
The educational activities are done classically for the intra-curricular program and tutorial (Sorogan) for the extra- curricular program. It employs semester system and Hijriyah calendar which is in line with the Islamic boarding school tradition that have been done for many centuries ago.
The institution management, funding, and provisioning means are implemented based on the principles of sincerity, trusteeship, autonomy (self help), simplicity, togetherness, openness and freedom in the strict discipline border based on the basic value and Islamic boarding school tradition. It is also implemented based on the standard of minimal school based management services where the parents and society are involved actively in an organization which so-called school committee. The wealthy of UQI is separated explicitly and transparently from the leaders’ ( Kyai) wealthy.
The formal evaluation of education is held twice in a year, namely semester I and semester II. Meanwhile the formal vacation is set twice in a year, namely after the first semester examination and the second semester examination

4.      All day long education
The education at UQI is implemented simultaneously, comprehensively, and continuously for 24 hours in an integrated curriculum and in a cooperative and peaceful life atmosphere but dynamic and competitive. Therefore, the whole students are obliged to stay at UQI Islamic boarding school.

CURRICULUM
The understanding of curriculum at UQI Islamic boarding school is not only restricted by structure of teaching program in and out of classroom, but also it covers all aspect of students’ and teachers’ life in doing their duty toward Allah the almighty and His apostle and human kind, as well as universe or their environment. Therefore, the curriculum at UQI Islamic boarding school is called “live and life curriculum”. All activities at UQI within 24 hours must be based on education goals and the principles and philosophy of UQI namely Islami (religious), Tarbawi (educative), and Ma’hadi (tradition of Islamic boarding school)

THE GOALS OF EDUCATIONAL CURRICULUM
Broadly speaking, the goals of educational curriculum at UQI Islamic boarding school are classified into three kinds, namely institutional goal, curricular goal and instructional goal. These goal are elaborated in some clear and assessable indicators



1.      Institutional goal
Institutional goal of UQI principally refers to national education goal which based on Islamic value and Islamic boarding school tradition, mainly on the frame work of implementing the duty to learn and seek the knowledge or deepen Islamic knowledge in complaint with vision and mission of UQI. Globally, institutional goal of UQI is to achieve the education and graduate such as follows:  
  1. Mu’min (believer), Muslim, and Muhsin (good doer) who has characteristic such as follows:
a.       Trusts in the oneness of Allah (Tauhid), loves apostle (Muhammmad SAW), consistent to perform the Islamic laws
b.      Sincere and consistent in volition, thought, feeling, words and deeds. 
c.       Ready to be deserving, developed and autonomy (stands lone) in all aspect of life. 
  1. The learner who has characteristic below:
a.       Possesses positive intellectual character toward learning community
b.      Masters the basic of Islamic intellectuality, leadership and pedagogy.
c.       “All-around” human kind in his life.
  1. The community and citizen who has some features such as follows:
a.       Ready to dedicate for the sake of family, community and nation interests
b.      Loves homeland and obeys legal constitutions
c.       Cares to humanity problems globally

  1. Fighter and hard worker
a.       Smart, capable, and autonomy in choosing professions and vocation
b.      Ready to do Islamic duty and education professionally
c.       Moderate amongst individuals and groups
Besides what mentioned above, UQI also has institutional goal special for female students namely to produce some graduates as follows below:
1.      Muslimah, mu’minah (believer) and muhsinah (good doer) who is piety and trusteeship
2.      Ideal good wife
3.      A professional mother
4.      A leader amongst the women.
2.      Curricular goals
Curricular goals are the goals that must be gained in the process of education in every determined education. The goals must support institutional goals which are written explicitly in main project of education program.   
3.      Educational and instructional goals
Educational and instructional goals are the goals that must be gained by the teachers and students in every lesson plans generally or specifically. The goals must also support institutional and curricular goals  

B.     MATERIAL COMPONENT
It is in line with vision and mission of UQI namely all activities are based on Allah the almighty and for the sake of Him as well as implementing the function of kholifah (leader) of Allah on the earth. Therefore, the material and content of education in UQI globally cover four elements namely:
1.      The education of belief and piety (Mu’amalah ma’al Lah war Rasul)
It is intended to impart the values of Aqidah, Syari’ah dan Akhlaq Islamiyah within students’ soul, by teaching them various knowledge concerning with the three aforementioned above and accustom them live in Islamic life to be a smart and skilful people in doing and keeping the faith of Allah and His apostle in any situation and condition.
2.      Personality education (Mu’amalah ma’an-Nafsi)
It is intended to impart the values of glorious and supreme Personality in learners’ soul i.e. by teaching personality knowledge (mathematic, logic, language and art) and various theories about personality (physical and psychical) as well as applying them within students’ daily life. Thus they have an integrated personality, sense of intellectual and emotional, autonomy and dignity in very aspect of life.       
3.      Community Education (Mu’amalah ma’an Nas)
It is intended to impart the principles of community values in learners’ soul namely by teaching social science (History, Geography, culture, politic, state structure) and various theories about community, leadership, and pedagogy, as well as applying them within students’ daily life. Thus they always strive to be in harmony life and beneficial for human kinds.  
4.      Natural Environment Education (Mu’amalah ma’al Alam wal-Biah)
It is intended to impart the values of natural environment life in learners’ soul vis-à-vis by teaching natural sciences (physics, biology, and chemistry), the basic technology, applied sciences, and various theories about environment preserve as well as implementing them within students’ daily life. Thus they recognise the nature, have the basic technology and have high consciousness of environment in implementing daily education.
The aforementioned four aspect of education above includes in four groups of education area namely Dirosat Islamiyah/Ulum Tanziliyah  (Islamic sciences), National Curriculum, Ulum Arobiyah (Arabic sciences) and Ulum Tarbawiyah Ma’hadiyah (educational Islamic boarding school sciences). Each of them must refer to four elements of education above.

C.    PROGRAM COMPONENTS
UQI Islamic Boarding School employs integrated curriculum for 24 hours. The program is designed to support the other program interactively. It is because in an activity often includes some interrelated materials and goals of education, so it cannot be dichotomised amongst each others. However, to ease the planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation, the programmes are classified into four kinds of activity. Below are the explanations of four kinds of education and calendar of daily activity:              
        I.      Kinds of activity
1.      Intra-curricular activity
It is implemented in the morning and afternoon in the classical, tutorial, structured and levelled system according to each stage. The activities are handled by teachers and assisted by selected senior students under the headmaster’s supervision and responsible. Namely:
1.1.Formal teaching learning in the classroom
1.2.learning of books (Kutub at-Turots)
1.3.Public speaking Club in three languages (English, Arabic and Indonesian)
1.4.Compulsory courses in the afternoon
1.5.Tutorial learning at night
2.      Co-curricular activity
It is to support intra-curricular activities which are implemented and integrated out of classroom by between marhalah Tsanawiyah (junior high school) and Aliyah (Senior high school) by tutorial system. The activities also are handled by teachers and assisted by selected senior students under the headmaster’s and head’s of UQI supervision and responsible. Namely:
2.1. Prayer in congregation is Compulsory for five prayers
2.2. Tahajjud prayer, Dhuha prayer, Ratib Al-Atthos, Ratib Al-Haddad, fasting Sunnah and other Nawafil
2.3. Tadarrus and Tadabbur al-Qur’an 
2.4. Istirham Thursday night.
3.      Extra- curricular activity
It is to support intra-curricular and co-curricular activities which are implemented and integrated out of classroom by between marhalah Tsanawiyah (junior high school) and Aliyah (Senior high school). This activity is handled by selected senior students through students’ organisation under the guidance and counselling assembly. Namely:
3.1. Organisation training
3.2. Scout program, Red Cross youth
3.3. Selected courses in the afternoon
3.4. Seminar, discussion, book review, and establishing the wall
           magazine.
3.5.  Art performance and dynamics group
3.6.  Sport, gymnastic and environment work.
4.      Guidance and Counselling activity
Guidance is implemented periodically and structured whether individually and collectively. Whereas counselling is conducted incidentally, whether it is concerned with personal, family, and social problems as well as learning problems. The activities are handled by tutors and the guidance and counselling assembly which are coordinated by guidance and counselling under the headmaster’s and vice director’s supervision and responsible.

HUMAN RESOURCES
There are five groups of human resources which are developed at UQI Islamic Boarding School, namely educators, non-educators, assistants, learners and out puts of education. Below are the brief explanations about them:   



A.    EDUCATORS
Educators at UQI Islamic Boarding School are not only restricted on the formal and legal requirements of teachers but also include some alumni or selected senior students who are capable and have certain achievements in giving positive contribution to teaching-learning process at UQI. The requirements of educators are more emphasised on their “readiness and willingness” to be a dedicated educator morally, mentally and intellectually as well as readiness in basic pedagogy. They are as follows:
1.      Head of UQI Islamic boarding school as the advisor
2.      Director or general leader (Mudir ’Aam) as a top manager and central figure as well as moral force for the whole teachers and students. 
3.      Vice of director as a manager assistant and financial manager at UQI (Male and female are separated in management)
4.      Headmasters (Mudir Marhalah) as managers and leaders in each school. (Male and female are separated in management)
5.      Female senior teachers or members of Majlis Tarbiyah al-Banat as the partners of head of UQI in implementing educational program particularly concerning with Guidance and Counselling for female students.
6.      Stayed teachers are the teachers who stay at complex of UQI and work all time at the environment of UQI (full timer)
7.      Non-stayed teachers are the certificated teachers who do not stay at complex of UQI and recruited to teach certain subjects whether they are from the aid of government or the others.
8.      Apprenticeship teachers (voluntary dedicators) are the alumni of UQI who have been conducting dedication at their alma mater.
9.      Community Professionals are the community figures who have certain expertises and intently recruited to teach at UQI.
10.  Selected senior students (male and female) who have certain requirements to assist the teachers mainly in extra-curricuar activities, moreover it is as a training media for them before they live amidst comminity.  

B.     NON-EDUCATORS (WORKERS)
The duty of non-educators (technical workers) is to do everything which cannot be done by teachers and students at UQI Islamic Boarding School. Their duties are to accomplish the school and Islamic Boarding School needs and welfare such as cooking, building hostels, keeping and supervising business unit of UQI.
   
C.    ASSOCIATE EDUCATORS
Associate Educators are the student’s parents and community figures around UQI Islamic Boarding School formally or non-formally who have consistency toward education. They are not merely involved in daily activities, but also invited to cope with the institutional problems as well as their sons and daughters’ educational development principally concerning with supervision and solution of personal problems. They are involved actively and take part in education process as the Associate Educators for the teachers.  

D.    STUDENTS (SANTRI-SANTRI)
The students must have appropriate readiness physically and spiritually as UQI is an institutional cadre which has condensed activities. Therefore, the recruitment of new students is selected with some requirements as follows:
The recruitment requirements of new students:
1.      Muslim or Muslimah between ages 12 – 22 years old.
2.      Have primary school certificate (SD/MI) or equivalent to pursue regular program (for 6 years learning period) and have junior high school certificate (SMP/MTS) to pursue special program (for 4 years learning period)
3.      Have an adequate personal, family and social life background (Islamic institutional cadres are preferred)
4.      Ready to live under strict discipline within UQI and have strong desire to accomplish their study until class six.
5.      Pass in entrancing exam of UQI Islamic Boarding School
6.      Fulfil all administrative requirements and payments.
7.      Accompanied and assigned directly by their parents to Kyai (head of UQI Islamic Boarding School)  
The subjects of entrancing exam:
Ä  Oral and practical exam includes reading noble Qur’an, daily practical worship.
Ä  Written exam includes mathematic, Indonesian language, writing Arabic, and English (for intensive program)
Ä  Psycho test includes some things concerning with the requirement above.   

E.     ALUMNI OF UQI
Since the first graduation ceremony in 2000, UQI Islamic Boarding School has passed hundreds of alumni amidst community. Most of them have been pursuing their study at university in Indonesia or abroad, and the rest of them have dedicated within community all over Indonesia in various professions and struggle fields such as Education, Dakwah, economy, politic, social and culture. However, they always keep in touch with their alma mater by establishing an organisation so-called Ikatan Keluarga Besar Pondok Pesantren Ummul Quro Al-Islami (The Great Family of UQI Islamic Boarding School Association).

THE ORGANIZATION OF UQI ISLAIC BOARDING SCHOOL
UQI Islamic Boarding School is managed by staffs of institutional hierarchic organization. The members consist of Kyai (the Head), Teachers (male and female) and assisted by selected senior students as the students’ educational leadership and management through students’ organization. All activity at UQI is hardly handled by the teachers themselves and students. They work sincerely and with all their heart and soul in line with the values, principles, and the goals of determined education. 
STRUCTURE OF ORGANIZATION
Globally, the structure of organization at UQI and its functions can be drawn as the following snapshots:
Leadership elements:
1.      Director (Mudir ‘Aam) or the nurturer of Islamic Boarding School, vis-à-vis Kyai Senior (the head) as the highest director, top-manager, and responsible of the whole UQI program structurally, functionally, and instructively, as well as partnership in and out of UQI.
2.      Vice of Director. His duty is to accompany or represent the Director and Financial Manager who is responsible to financial input and output of UQI Islamic Boarding School.
3.      Headmasters. They are two senior teachers whose functions are head, manager, and responsibleness of each programme (Male and Female are separated) structurally, functionally, and instructively in and out of UQI
Under the three heads above, there are four kinds of organization structure which function to implement structural, functional, and instructive, as well as partnership. Namely:
1.      Secretary. Its function is to assist the Director, Vice of Director and headmasters in school and Pesantren affairs whether they are inside or outside and responsible of all school and Pesantren administrations.
2.      Treasurer. Its function is to assist the Director, Vice of Director and headmasters in financial affairs and responsible of students’ tuitions.

3.      Organization Guidance Assembly. It consists of some teachers (Ustadz and Ustadzah) who coordinate the whole guidance and counselling activities at UQI and responsible of students’ organization, discipline, and punishment as well as extra-curricular activities.    
4.      Class of Tutors. They consist of some teachers (Ustadz and Ustadzah) according to available class. Their main duty is to implement guidance and counselling in their class, mainly concerning with the process of teaching learning and students’ personality.


STUDENTS’ ORGANIZATION
Students’ organization at UQI is run and managed by students themselves. It is called Ikatan Santri Putra (ISPA) and Ikatan Santri Putri (ISPI). It has three functions namely as the Head assistance, the medium of organization training, and the facilitator of students’ aspiration. The whole extra-curricular activities are run and managed by this students’ organization under teachers’ guidance which is so-called Organization Guidance Assembly.
This organization is managed by staffs consist of senior students (class V and VI) and the organization is separated between male and female as well such the following below:
