ABSTRACT
This thesis tries to find out the effectiveness of
the improvement of speaking proficiency in the Boarding School System at Ummul
Qurro’ Islamic Boarding School Banyusuci Leuwiliang Bogor. This system has been
existing for hundreds years ago (Arifin. M. P.104) and was effective in
building students’ character. This system was regarded as the oldest
institution in Indonesia
(Djumhur I and Dana saputra. 1981), it had its own method to improve students’
speaking proficiency, the teacher and students lived in one system with some
regulation, rules and discipline to obey. By this neighbourhood, it is easier for the teachers to establish the
students’ proficiency primarily in speaking. The thesis focused on merely speaking
proficiency as it’s the main point of language that is to communicate (Noam
Chomsky.1957).
The study employed a descriptive research design,
embracing of a case study. The data were obtained from many sources for about
six months, such as observation in the field; interview the teachers and the
students, test the students in case of speaking ability then the last book research
that is what kinds of books that applied in the system.
The findings discovered that in spite of some
limitations, the improvement of speaking proficiency in the Boarding School
System at Ummul Qurro’ Islamic Boarding School Bogor was relatively effective.
Most of students taken as random sample (Suharsini Arikunto.1993) were good at
speaking on average. The test emphasized
on some criteria, namely fluency, pronunciation, and grammar.
Based on the study, this thesis recommended that
the Boarding School System should be applied primarily in “excellent school”,
as the whole activities could be well organized in that system. And teaching
learning should be conducted by conducive milieu and environments.
