Writing is not an easy task when we have nothing to write.
Especially for beginner, it is often confusing and frustrating when he or she
begins to write something. Many people believe that a good writer is simply
born that way, or has lucked into a procedure for getting words on paper
quickly and easily. The wise word says “All beginning is difficult”, but
everything is possible. We can if we think we can. In compliance with this
matter, KH. Abdullah Gymnastiar (Aa Gym) said: “Begin from a small thing,
begin from your own self and act now!”
In this respect, Alwasilah tried to give a solution
how to begin with writing. He gives an efficacious medicine to begin with writing,
namely: IREX. What is it? It is Inspiration or Idea, Research and
Experience. He added that some one should have three components above.
1.
Inspiration or Idea. According to The American
Heritage Dictionary of the English Language that inspiration means:
a.
Stimulation of the mind or
emotions to a high level of feeling or activity.
b.
The condition of being so
stimulated.
c.
A sudden intuition as part of
solving a problem
d.
An idea (Greek: ιδέα) is a
specific thought or concept that arises in the mind of a person as a result of
thinking.
After
having identified these definitions, I can conclude that Inspiration is a capital
for our brain to think. It can come suddenly, it comes from many things. And
every one differs from the others in gaining an inspiration. Therefore, it is
important to have an inspiration.
For
example, some people get inspiration when the rain falls, when see something,
when visit a place, in the sea, at lake, on a mountain and so forth. Every one
has his own way to get or find the inspiration.
2.
Research
Webster
Dictionary stated that Research as follows:
a. careful or diligent search
b. Studious inquiry or examination; especially : investigation or experimentation
aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted
theories or laws in the light of new facts, or practical application of such
new or revised theories or laws
c.
The collecting of information
about a particular subject
d.
Diligent
and systematic inquiry or investigation into a subject in order to discover or
revise facts, theories, applications, etc.: recent research in medicine.
To be a
good writer, he or she should do research first to make some evident and data. It
will support his statements. Thus, after doing some research, it is easier to
the writers to express his idea.
3.
Experience.
There are some meanings of experience; namely:
a.
A
particular instance of personally encountering or undergoing something: My
encounter with the bear in the woods was a frightening experience.
b.
The
process or fact of personally observing, encountering, or undergoing something:
business experience.
c.
The
observing, encountering, or undergoing of things generally as they occur in the
course of time: to learn from experience; the range of human experience.
d.
Knowledge
or practical wisdom gained from what one has observed, encountered, or
undergone: a man of experience.
e.
Philosophy. The totality of the cognitions given by perception;
all that is perceived, understood, and remembered.
Experience is the best teacher. We can also learn from
people’s experience to take benefit from it. Every one has experience to tell,
but not every one can express it in writing. I am sure by gaining more
experience; it will be easier to write.
These three components, according to Alwasilah, are
very important and have close relation each others in processing creativity and
a writer must stand on them.
In this case I do not agree with Alwasilah. In my
point of view, the article is not always based on the three components (Idea,
Research, and Experience). It can be only based on idea and experience, such as
fiction articles, short story and the like. Some one still can write without
doing research before.
How to assess a composition? According to Wahyu Wibowo
(2001), there are some criteria that we can assess it. Namely:
A.
Content
1.
Idea
2.
The
originality of idea
3.
Idea operation
4.
Supported
Data
B.
Language
Presentation
1.
Sentence
accuracy
2.
Diction
accuracy
3.
Coherency
of paragraph
4.
Suitability
with writing
5.
Spelling
C.
Technique
of writing
1.
Coherency
of idea
2.
Tidiness
or order of writing
3.
Relationship
between title and content
Wahyu Wibowo added that a writer at least should have
two elements; namely Vision and Mission .
Vision is a topic and theme of writing, the main point and the goal of it. Whereas
mission is something that comes after vision, or something that would be
delivered to the readers.
Wibowo said that a good writing has some
characteristics as follows:
1.
The
writer knows what he/she must say by comprehending target (Vision) and able to
determine the segment of readers (Mission ).
2.
The
writer is able to write an outline based on vision and mission.
3.
The
writer is able to understand how to express his/her self well based on
effective sentences.
