ANALYZING SHORT STORIES
There are seven
stories here, and we have to determine which one is the first story to present.
In my point of view, it should be adapted and suited with the children
characteristics. In story telling, according Musthafa (2003:10), we must be
based on these assumptions:
- Children’s
ability to grasp meaning
- Children’s
creative use of limited language resources
- Children’s
capacity for indirect learning
- Children’s
instinct for fun and play
- The
role of imagination
The first story
that should be given to the children is “THE
FOX AND THE CROW” since it is the simplest story to tell and easy to
understand. The sentences in that story are quite understandable. It also
contains the lesson for children to be careful and not be cheated by any persons.
Usually children like the attractive and short story. This story should be
repeated until they memorize it. From this story we can also highlight some
grammatical aspects such as interrogative and interjection.
The fox and the Crow
A crow sat in
a tree.
In his beak
was big piece of cheese.
A fox sat
under the tree and looked up at the crow.
He was
hungry!
‘Oh, handsome
crow!’ the fox said.
‘Are you the
king of the birds?
‘Can you
sing?’ he asked the crow. ‘The king of the birds sings beautifully’.
The crow
opened his beak. ‘Kaa! Kaa! He sang.
What a terrible noise!
The cheese
fell down, and the fox ate it for his dinner.
The fox
laughed.
‘You can’t be
the king of the birds. He’s clever, you’re not’
The second story
is “WHO IS THE KING OF THE FOREST ?” since it is not too long for children and easy to understand. It has a clear
and engaging opening. It is still about animals and contains the lesson that we
can teach them like we should not be cheated anymore. From grammatical aspect,
we can use past tense and present perfect tense.
WHO
IS THE KING OF THE FOREST ?
When a tiger jumped on a fox, the fox
cried out,” How dare you attack the king of jungle?”
The tiger looked at him in amazement,” Nonsense!
You are not a king!”
Certainly I am,” replied the fox,” All
animals run from me in the terror! If you want a proof, come with me.” The fox
went into the forest with the tiger at his heels. When they came to a herd of
deer, the deer saw the tiger behind the fox and ran in all directions.
They came to a group of monkeys. The
monkeys saw the tiger behind the fox and they fled. The fox turned to the tiger
and said, “Do you need more proof than that? See how the animals flee when they
saw me?!”
“I’m surprised, but I’ve seen it with my
own eyes. Forgive me for attacking you, Great king.” The tiger bowed low and
with great ceremony he let the fox go.
The third story
should be “A LITTLE GREEN LEAF”, since
it is not too long story and simple to understand. It is about the life of
nature. We can teach the
concept of colour
like green, brown.
We also can use some grammatical aspects to develop children skill such as past
tense, direct speech and past continuous tense. We can also use directive
sentence like “go a head” and “jump”
A
little green leaf
It
was a great summer day. The little green leaf was playing merrily with his
brothers and sisters.
One
day the wind started to blow.
“Autumn
is coming!” said one of his brothers.
“But I want it to be summer
forever!” said the little green leaf.
“You can’t stop autumn from
coming!” said one of his sisters.
Sure enough one the leaves
turned brown. The little green leaf became a little brown leaf now. He didn’t
like it.
“I am so ugly,” he said.
“No, you look normal,” said
mother tree.
Then one by one the leaves
fell into the ground.
“Yippee,” the shouted
But the little brown leaf held
on very tightly.
Mother tree said, “Go ahead!
Jump!”
“No, I want to be up here forever,”
he said.
Soon he was the only one on
the tree. He felt lonely. He saw his brothers and sisters playing on the
ground. He felt lonely. He saw cold.
When he was sleeping, a bird
came and plucked him. The bird gently put him on the ground.
The little leaf was socked
when he woke up. But soon he was already happy and comfortable among his
brothers and sisters.
“I guess autumn is nice too,”
he thought.
The fourth story
should be A LITTLE GREEN LEAF. Its
words and language are not strange and it is easy to understand. It is about
animal life which children usually like it. Story's sequence of events is easy
for the children to follow. But it must be often repeated to make children
memorize and understand the sequence of story. We still can use grammatical
aspects like, direct speech and imperative.
SCAT! SCAT!
LITTLE CAT!
Kitten cat was a little white cat.. She was a
good little kitten. But she did not have a home. Kitten cat wanted to find a
home. So down the street she went. So down the street she went. She walked and
walked. She did not know where to go.
The kitten cat a good green house. A little
old woman was in the green. So kitten cat went into the house. She said, “Mew,
mew, ”to the little woman. But the old women did not like cats. She said,
“Scat! Scat! Go away little cat!”
The she saw a little red house. She did not go
the little red house. She did not want to hear “Scat! Scat!” again.
Then kitten cat saw patsy come out of the
house. Patsy saw kitten cat too.
“Mother, come and see this pet kitten!” said
patsy.
“May I have her please, Mother?”
Then the little cat went into the little red
house.
This time she did not hear “Scat! Scat! Go
away little cat!”
The little white cat was happy now.
She was a good little cat. And now she had a
good home.
The fifth story should be “The Chickens Take a Holiday ”. It is
still about animal which children like, but this story is somewhat complicated
that why it must be clear explanation and repeated more and more.
The
Chickens Take a Holiday
The
sun was about to rise on Farmer Tim’s farm. Chester chicken woke up the cows with his
important news.
“The chickens are taking a
holiday today,” Chester Chicken said.
“Is that so?” said Daisy the
cow.” What is the special occasion?”
“We worked too hard this
week,” Chester
said,” and there are only five of us.”
Daisy smiled and nodded her
head. Ten was a lot at five chickens.
“Enjoy your day off,” she
said.
“But what about us?” the other
cows said to Daisy. We gave Farmer Tim 100 pails of milk this week. There are
only ten of us!”
Daisy agreed with the cows
too. 100 pails of milk would make a lot of cheese.
“But we can’t take a holiday
on the same day as the chickens,” Daisy said. “What would Farmer Tim say?”
Daisy and the cows moved over
to a patch of grass to have breakfast.
Just then Rowdy Rooster began
to crow. It was for the farmer to wake up.
“Call him again,” the chickens
yelled to the rooster.” He must be having a dream.”
Rowdy made one last call and
this time Farmer Tim woke up. But he didn’t\’t come out. He opened the window
and shouted loud enough for everyone to hear:
“I worked too hard this week,
I say. It’s time I took a holiday!”
The sixth story
should be “Tom Thumb”. It is an imaginative story and attractive for children,
besides that children can learn about some chants like go left, go right, go
left, stop!
Tom Thumb
Once
a farmer and his wife wanted a son.
Even
one as small as a thumb!
A
magician heard them.
He
cast a spell…and Tom appeared!
Tom
as small as a thumb!
So they called him Tom thumb!
Tom
went everywhere.
One
day he jumped into a cake!
“Don’t
eat me!” he said.
Once
a bird got Tom and dropped him into the lake.
Tom
started to swim…
A big
fish ate him! Quickly, Tom’s father caught the fish and took it home.
“Oh,
Tom, you’re fine!” his mother said when she opened the fish.
“I
was scared!”
One
day, Tom was working with the horse.
“Go
left,” he whispered…
“Go
right,”…
“Stop!”
Two
bad men got Tom and the horse.
“you
can work for us!” they said.
“Go
into the rich man’s house and get his money.” Tom was scared.
Tom
whispered. “Go left,”…
“Right,”…”Stop!”
And
took the bad men to the police station!
“What
a clever little boy!” said the police officer. “Well done!”
Tom
went to see the king and queen.
“Well
done, Tom,” they said.
Tom
quickly went to his house.
“I’m
here!” he said.
His
mother and father were very happy.
The last story is
“Three Little Mice”. It is an
imaginative story and the longest story. That is why we should put it in the
last. It is about animal life which children like very much. We can teach
children how to order (imperative) such as come on, let’s go, hurry up!...
Three
Little Mice
Once upon a time there were little
mice, Tiko, Tiki, and Toki. They lived in a mushroom house. Big brother Tiko
was a very diligent mouse. But Tiki and Toki were very lazy. Everyday, toki and
tiki just were sleeping, eating, and playing.
One day Tiko wanted to plant an
apple tree in the garden.
‘Come on, who wants to help brother
Tiko?’ asked Tiko.
‘I’m sorry. We can’t help you
brother Tiko’. Said Tiki
‘We are playing now’ said Toki.
Finally, Tiko went alone to water the
apple tree in the garden
The next day, Tiko wanted to water
the apple tree
‘Come on, who wants to help brother
Tiko?’ asked Tiko.
‘I’m sorry. We can’t help you
brother Tiko,” said Tiki
‘We are playing now.” said Toki.
Finally, Tiko went alone to water
the apple tree in the garden
The following day, Tiko want to
fertilize the apple tree
‘Come on, who wants to help brother
Tiko?’ asked Tiko.
‘I’m sorry. We can’t help you
brother Tiko’ said Tiki
‘We are playing now’ said Tiko.
Finally, Tiko went alone to
fertilize the apple tree in the garden.
When the apple tree bore fruits,
Tiko wanted to harvest the apple
Come on, who wants to help brother
Tiko?’ asked Tiko
‘I’m sorry. We can’t help you
brother Tiko’ said Tiki
‘We are playing now’ said Tiko.
Finally, Tiko went alone to harvest
the apple in the garden.
After playing all day long, Toki
and Tiki got hungry.
‘Oh, I’m very hungry’ said Toki
‘Oh, I’m hungry, too. But there’s
nothing to eat’ Tiki said
‘Let’s go to Mr. Cat’s house. There
must be a lot of food there’.
Then, Toki and Tiki went to Mr.
Cat’s house
Mr. Cat was a rich cat. At Mr. Cat’s
house there were a lot of foods.
When they got into the house, Mr.
Cat’s house, Mr. Cat caught them and then put Tiki and Tiko in a cage.
Toki and Tiki were very, very sad.
Fortunately, brother Tiko came to help them
‘Come on. Hurry up! We should get
out of here”
And then they run away from Mr.
Cat’s house before Mr. Cat woke up.
Finally, they arrived home safely
and happily. From that moment, Tiki and Tiko were not lazy anymore. They always
helped brother Tiko.
